How to Wash Graphic Tees Without Fading the Print

A great graphic tee lives or dies by how well the print holds up — and most fading, cracking, and peeling happens not from age, but from how the shirt is washed. Here's how to make your prints last as long as the fabric does.

Turn It Inside Out

This is the single most important step. Washing a tee inside out means the print isn't taking direct friction against other clothing, the drum, or itself — which is where most cracking and surface wear comes from.

Wash Cold, Always

Hot water accelerates ink breakdown and can cause prints to bleed or crack faster, especially on all-over-print and sublimation designs. Cold water is gentler on both the fabric and the print, and it also helps colors stay true for longer.

Skip the Dryer When You Can

Heat is the fastest way to age a graphic print. If you can air dry — even just laying the shirt flat rather than hanging it, which can distort the shoulders — you'll extend the life of the print significantly. If you must use a dryer, use low heat and pull it out while still slightly damp.

Avoid Fabric Softener on Prints

Fabric softener leaves a residue that can build up on printed areas over time, making designs look duller and slightly hazy. A mild detergent without added softeners is the safer long-term choice for anything with a large printed surface.

Don't Overload the Wash

Cramming too many clothes into one load increases friction between garments, which is exactly the kind of rubbing that cracks prints. Washing graphic tees in a smaller, gentler load — or a dedicated delicate cycle — pays off over the life of the shirt.
